Sap Business One As Global Erp Or How To Select Software For Multinational Company
It is often the case that headquarters is located in United States or Canada
. And here in the headquarters you may already have accounting system implemented or are looking for something popular on American software market. How about your international branches and facilities? Is this application translated to the languages of the country and is it in compliance to local regulation? We sometimes hear the responses that it is not a big deal to translate several forms to Chinese or Brazilian Portuguese where our office is located. We would like to give you some reasoning for being a bit pessimistic. Lets begin with Chinese ERP market specific and then move to Brazil and Russian Federation:
1.Chinese hieroglyphs and Unicode. Here in North America we use English or French Canadian. In general languages with European heritage have only around three dozens of letters based on Latin alphabet and in the case of French or Portuguese with accent marks. Latin letters are realized in so-called ASCII standard where only half of the byte (127 characters) does the job. Popular domestic accounting packages use ASCII and do not care about more complex situations. Lets now think about the number of Chinese hieroglyphs as it is definitely higher than 127 and 256 (the whole computer byte). In order to computerize Chinese language new standard was introduced known as Unicode where each character is encoded in two bytes (which can handle up to 65,535 and all known World languages are encoded in Unicode standard). We would like to give you just one example of very popular ERP platform in the United States which doesnt support Unicode. It is Microsoft Dynamics GP formerly also known as Great Plains Dynamics
2.Brazil and its rapidly growing economy make it popular destination for multinational firms to acquire mining, food processing or manufacturing facility in the state of Sao Paulo and across the region. Can we adopt American software for our Brazilian subsidiary? Well, besides Brazilian Portuguese translation here you should expect another challenge. It is Public Digital Bookkeeping System or SPED. It is introduced as required for corporate businesses in 2008. The idea is great as all Sales and Purchasing invoices are reported to the central server and made public (for lawyers, CPA and IRS folk communities). SPED also have General Ledger reporting which is based on standard chart of accounts. Corporations typically design their own chart and this is OK but corporate GL accounts should be mapped to SPED accounts. Reporting is over the internet connection. If you favorite US based accounting package doesnt have SPED add-on we do not recommend you to try to program it in-house
3.Russian Federation. Here quarterly and annual reporting has standard forms where Balance and P&L should be submitted in regulated forms. In contrast to what we have here in United States Russian reporting is tending to be based on Cash and not Accrual formulas. There is also required GL Chart of Accounts with predefined GL procedures
4.Lets take some questions. Well we like Microsoft Dynamics GP here in the headquarters and we would like to adopt it in our offices in China, Brazil and Moscow. Is it feasible idea? The answer is probably no as it doesnt support Unicode (Chinese data entry), Brazilian SPED and doesnt have Portuguese translation. The same about Russia in earlier 2000th when Microsoft acquired Great Plains Software Microsoft Decided to feature Navision and later on Axapta in Russia. The author of this publication actually worked on promoting Great Plains Dynamics in Moscow back in 1996 as well as localizing for Brazil in 2004. You cannot go against the decision making of large software development firm. In both regional markets around 2007 Microsoft decided to promoted Dynamics AX formerly known as Axapta
5.But why in the header of this article we see SAP Business One? This is because Business One is translated to major world languages (except Arabic) and is localized and promoted in such regions as Brazil, China, Russia and Western Europe
