Saxon Math As A Home-school Curriculum
Homeschooling a child, in these modern times is a tough job
. The laws, now established for homeschooling in most of the developed countries, have made it even harder. Even though the state rules for homeschooling have made it hard, but they are for the benefit of the child. Especially, parents face a lot of difficulties while homeschooling their child.
Most of the parents, who opt for homeschooling for their child, have studied the relative material a long time ago. They find it difficult to remember and reproduce the things taught to them at their time of study. Moreover, the knowledge they have is obsolete now. Science subjects such as mathematics require strenuous understanding of the subject by the parents themselves, in order for them to impart those concepts to their child.
Mathematics specially is a teaser for parents who have a homeschooled child. Saxon math is predominantly a teaching method and a curriculum for homeschooled children. Developed by an American electrical engineer of the US military academy, named John Saxon, this is a complete curriculum for a child to learn mathematics.
The Saxon math, a home-school math curriculum is augmented with marvelous features to guide and teach you at every level. The home-school curriculum caters all levels from primary through middle to the high level homeschooling.
The specialty of the Saxon math course is its repetitive methodology of teaching. Instead of crumpling many new mathematical concepts in the brain of a child at once, this curriculum takes it slowly, giving a new concept once every day. But that is not the main agenda; this curriculum makes the child revisit almost all the previously learned concepts and knowledge on daily basis. The day of the child is divided into two parts; one where he revises all the old teachings, and the other where a new concept is steadily introduced to the child.
The Saxon middle grade curriculum smoothly shifts the learners from manipulative and worksheet math to textbook approach. It emphasizes on algebraic and geometric concepts. Following its iterative approach, the new concepts are merged with the older concepts. The new chapters include reviews of the previous concepts. It comprises of upgraded levels of learning ad teaching. The middle grade curriculum holds investigative approach to give an in-depth treatment of math concepts. For convenience, parents can have the solution manual, which offers step-by-step solutions to the problems.
Parents who are homeschooling their children have to have a liking for math and the skills to teach it to their children. A parent who is weak in math will never feel at ease while teaching his/her children math, as he/she is unsure about the subject himself/herself. They would try to follow Saxon math as they may feel more comfortable in understanding math techniques and concepts; something that they themselves may lack.
Regardless of the debate surrounding Saxon math, its gaining popularity and a number of parents and teachers are using it to teach math to the children. The debate on Saxon math mixing topics in lessons and review work being too repetitive will continue, but that is to be expected.
