Some people cannot differentiate between scientific awards and scientific grants

. In fact, these are two absolutely different things! The only thing in common is that both of them are monetary support for scientists aimed at the development of the definite fields of science. As far as differences are concerned, well, there are many of them!

1.Scientific award is given after some scientific achievements and valuable discoveries and findings. Scientific grants are given to implement some scientific research which can lead to significant and valuable findings and discoveries.

2.Scientific grants should be applied for. So, applicants fill in the necessary forms and submit the necessary documentation. Thus, in this case people who obtain money are active. In the case with scientific awards nominees usually find out about the award right before the date of awarding ceremony. Some organizations and individuals nominate various scientists and their works. Thus, people who, actually, get money, are passive.

3.Besides, scientific grants may be divided into several parts and given to the scientists during a year or two years. Whereas, scientific awards are one-time monetary prizes.

4.Scientific grants are given for implementation of a single research. Scientific awards can be given for several findings and discoveries. Moreover, Scientific award take into account (well, as a rule) various publications of nominees, so to implement a successful research is (or may be) not enough.

5.Scientists can use only one scientific grant for a research and scientific awards do not follow this rule. One and the same scientist can receive several awards for his/her researches or discoveries.
