Secure The Perfect Position With These Interview Tips

A few interview tips may make all the difference to your chances of achieving your dream occupation with a new company

. With so much competition for every new position that is advertised, it isn't always easy to secure a new post. If you have been offered an interview with a new company, you are in a great position to further your career.

Face to face interviews often follow on from a telephone interview. It is important to make a good impression with your first meeting. Dress smartly. Even if the employees are casually dressed, the employer will expect job applicants to be well groomed. Clothes should be cleaned and pressed. Don't forget to clean your shoes. In most cases wearing a suit and tie to an interview is still acceptable for men

A woman should also dress smartly. Do not wear short skirts or revealing tops to an appointment for a new position. Some conservative establishments like women employees to wear skirts and jackets rather than trousers. Don't wear heavy make-up or flashy jewellery.

Do not be late. Check that you have the right day and date. If you are applying for several jobs around the same time, double check the time and place of each appointment. If you intend to use public transport, travel the route a few days before so that you know how long you need to allow for the journey. Carry the address and telephone number with you so you can contact the company if you are delayed.

If you are going to drive by car, work out the route beforehand. Estimate how long the journey will take and check where you will be able to park. Take some coins for the parking metre. Arriving ten minutes early for an appointment is the general recommendation.

Be courteous and polite to anyone you meet once at your destination. The receptionist may be asked for her initial reaction to your behaviour. Find out the name of the interviewer before the day. If introduced to others, try to remember and use their names.

At the appointment, thank the person for the chance to put forward your qualifications. Employers still appreciate good manners. When you are shown out at the end of the meeting thank them again for seeing you. A firm handshake is important. Don't forget to smile and look people in the eye when you talk to them.

Take any documentation with you that you think you might need. Read through the resume that you sent to the company and be familiar with the information in it. Let referees know that they may receive a call asking for their opinion of you and your work habits.

Do some research on the company that is interviewing you. If they have a website read it thoroughly. Learn a little more about their industry if you don't know much about it. Try to preempt questions that they might ask and prepare answers to these. Employers often ask interviewees if they have any questions so have something prepared.

Although applying for new positions can be very stressful, try to stay relaxed. Consciously relax your hands and shoulders. Be courteous throughout the process. By following these interview tips, you may soon find yourself with the position of your dreams.
