Self esteem can have a specified particular dimension or ca have a global extent. Self esteem is a personality trait as well as a state of being of an individual. Self esteem is often synonymous with self worth; self regards; self respect; self respect and self integrity.

Self esteem has a very important role to play in an individual's overall life. It affects various aspects of his life ranging from his behavior at home, at work, within social circles and also when he is alone. Self esteem not only has an effect but it also affects in turn the entire productivity of an individual, be it an adult or a kid.

School life is associated with teaching and learning, friends and foes, admirations and bullies. Bullying is certainly a big problem and needs definite attention of adults. Bullying has a direct effect on a child's self esteem. Bullying can make a child feel hurt and unwanted. Bullies are worse than hits and blows. Teasing, threatening, calling names and scaring kids can affect the entire personality development of kids.

A child with high self esteem can however handle the bullies with courage and come out of the shell, it takes ages and sometimes a lifetime on the other hand for those faring low on the self esteem scale to break the ice. A child with high self esteem is an eager child always ready to learn and handle situations in life. Such a child will able to stand tall against the bully without giving him enough chance to do his act. Being brave and implying without having said:"don't mess with me" helps a lot.

Bullies often try to make the child feel unworthy, however if a child is on the positive side of self esteem, he cannot feel so. Understanding that nobody is perfect in this world and that the child himself is the best possible individual can easily send the message to the rowdy bullies and thus help them to keep away from such pests. On the other hand a child with low self esteem will satisfy all the purposes of a bully, by crying and trying to escape.

The issue seems trivial, but in reality is a grave problem. The harsh memories of bullies can last a lifetime and make the kid grow up into a withdrawn child, having least self confidence and self respect. Thus the trick is to take the problem where it starts from. Parents are most important people in a child's life and parenting has a very important role to play in developing high self esteem in kids. Love, attention, appraisals and gifts are what a child looks for. The tender minds need to be heard and attended to. If the child is crying he must be attended to.
