Tips for Helping Your Special Needs Child With School
Tips for Helping Your Special Needs Child With School
With the difficulty in learning, you'll have to take extra time to help them with school work and learning so they can be successful just like the other kids in their class. One way to make this happen is to take their learning disabilities into consideration when you choose the classes they take and the teachers they have in school.
If your child struggles in a certain class you should talk to the school about this concern and brainstorm on ideas to help him through it. One suggestion is to ask if there is a tutor that can help him before or after school. Another option is to suggest that your child be placed in a special education class for that subject.
Some schools offer an after school class that's called Bridges. This class is designed to help children that are struggling in Math or Reading. The class counts are low and the teachers are there to help the students with the specific problem they have. This may be very helpful for your child as he'll have the ability to learn in a way that meets his needs.
If these options don't work, another option is to consider a different school. You may be able to find a school that specializes in the special needs children. Usually these schools offer really small class sizes which gives each child a chance to learn in a way that works for them. Some children learn when teachers show them things on paper while others learn when teachers talk to them out loud. These types of schools are really good for children with learning disabilities or special needs.
As a parent of a special needs child I know how important it is to find ways to help your child learn and have fun while they're at school. My son is in 6th grade and has been on an IEP since he was two years old. He spent the majority of his elementary school years giving up recesses to work on reading and writing. He would go in before school for help and stay late for help.
When he went into 6th grade he moved to a middle school and was told he needed to be in a Math Lab class and a Reading Lab class. This meant he would have to give up his electives. I immediately called the principal to see if there were any alternatives to this suggestion. This is when we discovered he could go into a special education English class and he wouldn't have to do a Reading Lab. So if your child is in this situation, it's important you immediately contact the school to see what options are available to him.
Just because your child has special needs or has a learning disability doesn't mean he needs to give up everything to learn. When you communicate with the school and look at all of your options you'll see what's available for him.
