Self Growth Methods For College Students
A lot of successful people in the world speak fondly of their college experience
. Even those who only spent a couple of years in college talk about the lessons they learned. However, when these people talk about the lessons theyve learned, theyre not just talking about their academic lessons. As long as you have the right attitude, there are plenty of lessons you can learn outside the classroom. There are plenty of activities that can help you achieve self growth. Here are some very useful tips a college student can use to make the most out of his college experience.
1.Keep healthy. Good health is an essential element of self growth; without it, you cannot thrive and develop as a person. You also wouldnt be able to study or understand your lessons well. Studies show that too many college students skip breakfast, subsist on sodas and Ramen noodles and do very little exercise that, as a result, their ability to retain important information is lessened. Dont be like a lot of students who go from freshman to senior year in poor health. Adopt the right attitude towards nutrition by eating a healthy breakfast like cereal with milk, eating plenty of fruit and vegetables for extra vitamins, taking enough protein, keeping hydrated and getting enough exercise.
2.Join a club or organization. Special-interest clubs or organizations are great for self growth. Not only do you get the opportunity to mingle with like-minded people, you can also discover more things about your field of interest. Club meetings usually include lively discussions, so go in there with the right attitude and be prepared to debate, parry and postulate on your favorite topics. Dont get too cocky, though; if there is one thing people detest, its a know-it-all-type of person who tries to lord over the discussions. Build a good name in the organization by being respectful, active, prompt and considerate to others.
3.Be an active participant in class. Actively participating in a class debate or lecture contributes to your self growth as it helps you build confidence in speaking up and hones your communication skills to help you become more articulate. It also helps you cultivate the right attitude by exercising diplomacy when you choose your words carefully especially when discussing a very politically sensitive issue and exercising patience when dealing with classmates who shoot down your ideas. Plus being an active student during lectures wins you brownie points in the eyes of professors who can serve as future reference when you apply for further study grants or apply at another school for advanced degrees later in life.
4.Its okay to miss home, but dont dwell on it too long. Freshmen are normally apprehensive during the first few days of being away from home and thats understandable. Being home most of your life and then suddenly finding yourself on your own in a large campus without your parents to hold your hand can be nerve-wracking. However, rather than dwelling on your misery, why not see this new phase in your life as an opportunity for self growth and developing the right attitude that will prepare you for the rigors of post-graduation life, particularly when you join the work force? This is your chance to prove your family back home that they raised you well!
5.Dont neglect your social life. If you think that perpetually sticking your nose in a book is the sole formula for success in college, youve got another think coming. Isolating yourself in constant study is not the right attitude. You need to balance out the rigors of academics by relaxing and hanging out with friends. Mingling with people builds your social skills, which is an important component of self growth. It also raises your self confidence in being able to handle people from all walks of life. So on weekends when you have no pressing deadlines for Monday, make an appointment with a few close friends to have pizza and drinks at your favorite Italian restaurant, or watch a movie, or go bowling. Do anything but study!
The amount of liberty and freedom one has in college can be quite overwhelming for some people who are living away from their parents for the first time. Unfortunately, a lot of students dont adjust well to this newfound independence and end up neglecting their lessons. Make sure you approach this freedom with the right attitude. This new environment is a great opportunity for self growth. Be responsible with your independence that you may learn important lessons from this unique experience.
