Setting The Proper Exercise Goals
Deciding to start exercising is a great start in the right direction
, but your exercising goals should be more specific than simply exercising or it will be hard to maintain the motivation to exercise every day. There are several things you should consider as you decide on what you specific exercising goals should be.
First of all, you need to write you goals down. Start you goal making process by finding a pen and some paper.
Goals are worthless when they are not written down somewhere where you can see them. When they are written down it like you have made a commitment and you will be reminding of them every day.
When goals are simply in your head, they are not defined and they can easily be changed to allow you to work an easier exercise schedule. With your pen and paper, you will be ready to consider several various points of exercising.
The first things you will need to consider is why you want to exercise. You may want to exercise to lose weight, to lose inches in your size, to become in shape, to train for a particular sport, or to increase endurance.
You may also be seeking to build muscle or obtain greater flexibility. The reason you want to exercise may be a combination of several of these things.
By defining why you want to exercise, you will be able to choose the best types of exercises that can help you meet your goals. This is critical or you will become discouraged and quit exercising because the exercises you are performing are not helping you work towards the goal you are striving to achieve.
The second thing you will want to consider is to what extent you would like to carry out your goal. For example, if your primary goal is weight loss, you will want to define how much weight you want to lose exactly.
While the first step was very general, you will want to use this step to make you goal more specific. Decide how much muscle mass you want to gain, how many inches you want to lose, and so forth.
By having a specific goal to work towards it will be much easier to stay motivated as you can see your progress instead of simply exercising. Exercising is hard enough without making it harder on yourself.
When you have set a specific goal or two, review it and decide whether your goal is really realistic. If it is not realistic you will need to adjust it until it is.
If you try to strive for an unreachable goal, you will only become discouraged and stop exercising. However, if the goal is too easy, you will not feel a sense of accomplishment when you achieve it.
Deciding whether or not your goal is attainable may take a little online research. Look up how long it takes most people to lose so many pounds at a reasonable rate.
Find out how fast an average person can run the 5K. If you cannot find reliable answers online, you may want to consider talking to a trainer.
Trainers usually have extensive experience with the setting of a variety of goals and will be able to give you wise counsel. In general, most people will lose 1 pound of fat per week with a reasonable diet and amount of exercise.
Keep in mind that you will see a greater weight loss drop the first week because you will lose several pounds in water. By determining whether or not your goal is attainable, you will be able to be to determine about how long it will take you to reach your goal.
If it is going to take to too long to reach your goal, you will become discouraged and you will quit. The time frame of your goal will also have an impact on whether or not goal should be considered reasonable.
Once you have a firm, specific, reasonable goal you will be able to decide how you are going to achieve your goal. Decide whether running, lifting weights, or a combination of sports will help you achieve your goal the fastest.
This is also the step where you will decide with what intensity to exercise. Make sure this intensity is reasonable as well.
If you work out too hard in the beginning you could injure yourself. Last, but not least, decide how you will reward yourself when you achieve your goal.
Make sure you have fun with step. It will make all of your hard work worthwhile.
