Shower and Bath Techniques to Help Sleep or Improve Energy
We all love hot showers and hot baths. They feel awesome, seem relaxing and your muscles love it.
Problem is if you shower before bedtime, a hot shower actually invigorates you preventing healthy solid sleep.
Heat stimulates the sympathetic nervous system which is the fight or flight nervous system. This ramps you up and prevents you from falling asleep.
What you may want to do:
If you love your hot showers, take them! However, the last few minutes of your hot shower, flip the temperature to neutral meaning not hot and not cold. Stand under the cool water and let it flow down you. If you let yourself be present with your body at this moment, you will actually feel relaxed.
Then go lay down and enjoy a restful sleep.
Hot bath lover?
Take your hot bath at least one hour or more before sleep. This will allow your nervous system to calm down and allow you to sleep. A health tip: fill your bath with the door open and/or window open in the bathroom. Chlorine is a volatile gas and heat makes it more so. Having a closed door while filling a hot bath is a gas trap which is harmful to your lungs. This is kind of a bummer as you lose heat in the bathroom. So if you do not want to lose that extra bit of heat, use theCrystal Bath Ball Chlorine Filter which removes chlorine from 200 baths.
Bath lover?
Take a neutral bath - not hot and not cold - basically your body temperature - 99 degrees. Lay back and relax. You'll sleep like a baby.
Tired in the morning?
Take a nice warm shower and at the end, slam the temperature control to cold - all the way - if you don't have asthma. Let the cold water spray down on you for 30 seconds and then turn off the water. BAM. You're awake, hot and energized. I do this all the time. Love it. You'll actually begin to crave it.I wrote a full article on Contrast Showers. Enjoy it.
Hot shower lover?
Of course - you're reading this post! :)
Like a hot bath, chlorine is a volatile gas and hot showers make it more so. You're trapped behind that shower curtain inhaling all of it into your lungs. Your skin is also absorbing the chlorine along with getting dried out. I bet you have dry skin after showering - especially in the winter. Achlorine shower filter will take care of that. My wife used to apply moisturizer to her face, arms and legs daily after showering. I woke up to what was happening. No more moisturizers - which be harmful also due to all the crap they put in there.
Enjoy falling asleep in the evening with cool baths and showers.
Enjoy waking up in the morning with a hot shower followed by a cold blast for 30 seconds!
