Shri. Abbas Tyrewala - Director Of Bollywood

Abbas tyrewala loved words; right from his earliest years he had a penchant for writing

. And then he, of course, went on to pen lyrics, dialogues and screenplays for bollywood films like asoka (2001), munnabhai mbbs (2003), darna mana hai (2003), maqbool (2004), main hoon na (2004), salaam namaste (2005), etc.

But it was with his directorial debut Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (2008), Abbas Tyrewala gained recognition. During his early childhood, all Abbas would do was write poems and stories and then recite them in front of his whole class. By the time he reached the fourth grade, storytelling was not enough. Abbas wanted to create them.

He would call a few students, come up with a story, tell them their roles, and improvise: the whole play was ready by then, and this would happen at Boy Scout camps too. Abbas wanted stories to be told wherever he could reach. He enjoyed the act of holding the audience. He enjoyed telling stories.

He joined St Xavier College in Mumbai, where plays became a part of his life. But it was during the first year of his college, Abbas got the initial entry into professional writing. A friend of Abbas who was working at an advertising firm approached him for an ad jingle.

Fortunately for Abbas, the agency jingle writer had deserted them at the last moment. And they needed a jingle in a very short time to which he obviously agreed. And he wrote. He wrote the jingle for Cema Extra Bright Tube light in 1993.

Abbas was also the production assistant for the Cema commercial supervising continuity. To his surprise, the jingle was recorded in a day time and he heard it for a total of six times in disbelief. Abbas, for the first time, had been paid for his writing.

Abbas also translated advertisements from English to Hindi. When he was a month away from his final year examination, he was asked to choose between graduation and a job with Ogilvy & Mather P. R. By then, he was sure that he wanted to write.

His parents were a bit uncomfortable, but they supported him. Abbas worked with O&M for a year. He also wrote some scripts for television. Later, he joined the television production company Cine vista as a creative consultant. In March 2000, he quit television. Abbas, now wanted to switch to films.

Abbas entered the film industry as a lyricist with the film dil pe mat le yaar (2000). he then wrote the lyrics for love ke liye kuch bhi karega (2001), tere liye (2001). he also penned the dialogues for the shahrukh khan starrer asoka (2001).

Abbas got a much bigger responsibility as a writer with Ram Gopal Varma Darna Mana Hai (2003). Along with the lyrics and the dialogues, he wrote the story and screenplay for the film. The film failed though. But he soon got his big break with Rajkumar Hirani Munnabhai mbbs (2003).

He was highly appreciated for the lyrics and dialogues and he was awarded with the Filmfare Best Dialogue Award. Then there came a time when Abbas realized that he had been writing continuously for the past couple of years. He had completely worn out; he coul dont write a word more.

Then he decided to shift to direction. Hence, Jaane tu ya jaane na was born. After many years holding the pen, the year 2008 saw Abbas Tyrewala donned the director hat with the romantic comedy Jaane tu ya jaane na, which was obviously written by him.

The film was also the debut of actor Imran Khan, Aamir Khan nephew, cast alongside Genelia Dsouza. It was produced under the banner Aamir Khan Productions. The film became one of the biggest hits of the year. It received generally positive reviews especially from the youth for its refreshing, naive take on romance. The film won 3 Film fare Awards and another 5 nominations including the Best Film.
