Side effects of caffeine include less pain during exercise

Most people drink caffeine in the morning to feel more energized and ready to take on the day

. A recent study found that consuming this substance before a workout can also have effects. The first thought that came to my mind when I came across this University of Illinois study was that you would get the same energizing result from the caffeine and be able to have a longer workout session, which isnt surprising. However, the research showed that consuming caffeine before exercising can also make it a much less painful experience when it comes to muscle tightness and fatigue. This study, conducted by University of Illinois kinesiology and community health professor Robert Motl, was an extension of his earlier research that found "caffeine works on the adenosine neuromodulatory system in the brain and spinal cord, and this system is heavily involved in nociception and pain processing." Motl was aware that caffeine doesnt allow adenosine to function, so he assumed that this would reduce the amount of pain experienced during exercise, which this study determined to be true. He also found that habitual caffeine users and those who rarely or never consumed caffeine would have the same painless effects during their workout. Motl was quoted in this article as saying, "[o]ne of the things that may be a practical application, is if you go to the gym and you exercise and it hurts, you may be prone to stop doing that because pain is an aversive stimulus that tells you to withdraw. So if we could give people a little caffeine and reduce the amount of pain they're experiencing, maybe that would help them stick with that exercise[m]aybe then they'll push a little harder as well maybe get even better adaptations to the exercise." I somewhat agree with this statement. For those individuals who dont work out very often or are starting a new program, reducing the amount of pain felt during exercise seems like it would make them more likely to stick with the training. However, the harder you push yourself, the harder your muscles are working, which usually results in soreness in the days following exercise. If youre unaware how hard you are pushing yourself because you dont feel the normal pain telling you to stop, this after-exercise muscle soreness could become pretty intense. This could deter someone from continuing an exercise program, which would defeat the idea of practicing a painless workout as a means of adaptation in the first place. Along with muscle soreness, overtraining can also cause injuries to muscles and joints, such as strains and sprains. Without your body telling you to stop exercising by inflicting pain, it seems more likely that these types of injuries will occur. Whenever you are working out, be sure to listen to your body. If you are feeling pain, other than normal muscle fatigue, stop immediately and ask yourself, or a trainer if there is one available, if the exercise is appropriate. Use caution when using caffeine or other pain relievers before working out. The reduced amount of pain during exercise may seem to be advantageous, but could have adverse effects in the long run.
