Signs of Depression in Men
Depression in men is as common as depression in women. It is a serious but treatable medical condition and as I mentioned before it is a brain disease that affects both men and women. Traditionally it is assumed that depression is a disease that affects women rather than men
This over-developed sense of responsibility can lead to problems when a man loses his job or is incapacitated in some way. He is required to depend on others and can no longer support his family, making him feel useless and leading to depression.
They attended family events, sent their children to mainstream schools and told no one outside of the tuition committees of their financial situation. Their families worried but expressed their belief that the situation would improve soon.
Eat properly and avoid alcohol and drugs as an alternative. Depression can be treated for men and talking about it to a doctor or a general practitioner is nothing to be ashamed of. If you are worried about confidentiality, then discuss it with your doctor freely. There is nothing brave or powerful in not seeking help; real courage comes in accepting the truth and doing something about it.
If you want to look for signs of depression in men, you need to look at their behaviors. Alarm bells should ring when they seem to be changing too much. For example, they seem to be oversleeping lately, or they're having problems sleeping, or they appear more tense and stressed, or even show more anger lately.
Feeling down and depressed is part of the natural cycle of grieving. It becomes a problem when the feelings of sadness and depression start to interfere with your day-to-day life.
Depression in men is rather alarming because males tend to clam up instead of talk about their feelings. Men would rather bottle up emotions as opposed to talking to others about these. This would result in the man's family and friends not being aware of the internal goings-on in their depressed loved one.
The only difference is that the symptoms of depression are more easily detectable in women, as women never try to cover them. Men consider that expressing emotions is a feminine trait and will do everything to hide such symptoms when they are aware of them. So, instead of admitting to have emotional problems, they will say they are tired.
That's why depression in men oftentimes goes unnoticed. It's because men tend not to show their weaknesses. And this is when identifying the problem becomes a bit difficult. There are many causes why a man gets depressed. Those married or in a relationship may experience issues with their partners, and this could lead to depression.
I looked at Jason. No response. When asked to respond, he acknowledged that yes, work does take up all his time and energy, and yes, he is tired every day, but no, it's not that he doesn't care about his wife. No further explanation. Just more slumping and staring off into space.
