Most of us have grown up on a staple of fairy tales

, replete with gorgeous angels, a fairy godmother and, not to forget, Prince Charming. Practically all of us have dreamt of being swept up in the arms of that SOMEONE SPECIAL. But... real life is not that obliging. According to a report in the New York Times, 51 percent women in the United States are without a partner. A discouraging statistic? Perhaps. For women seeking men, certainly.

Hey! We are not suggesting for a moment that there is anything wrong with being a single woman. Being single can be fun, foot-loose, and fancy free. It can also mean having a lot of downtime for yourself. And if you prefer it that way, so be it. But if you would rather not be single then there are plenty of things you can do. Among the most obvious activities is dating. Some people suggest dating widely in order to expand your range of selection.

Communities in Europe and the States are now pushing forward the concept of chat boards for single women, single men, single parents, etc. Then there are dating bureaus that try and set you up with the - potentially - 'right' partner. And of course, lets not can forget well-meaning 'friends' and relatives who are constantly telling you what to do in order to hook that special someone. How many of us are regularly inundated with advice regarding make-up, hair, attitude and so on?

But come to think of it: for single women or, more specifically, for women seeking men, the possibilities are quite a few and all of them exciting if taken in the right spirit. The latest dating mantra lies in the web. Ever since bytes became an important mode of communication dating via air waves has surged ahead of the others. In France, for instance, online dating is now supposed to be bigger than porn! Even in the so-called conservative societies of the world, online dating is catching on. Such hope for single women, right?

Before clicking the mouse over the 'contact' button, however, there are some soul-searching questions you need to ask yourself: Are you carrying over excess baggage from other relationships? If so, you might want to work on yourself to get rid of that baggage before plunging into the dating scene.

Other questions might involve what you are seeking - a long-term relationship or a fun date, or both. Before getting to know someone else it may be a good idea to know yourself first.
