Social media, and social networking, has changed everything for the entrepreneurial business owner. Proactive public relations and marketing planning for your business, utilizing some of the freely available tools that I mention below, can put you ahead of your competitors without having an effect on your bottom line. Facebook Fan Page- Every business person and entrepreneur should have a Facebook Fan Page. There are 500 million people on Facebook and I am fairly certain that some of them are your clients. You may have your own personal profile but do you really need potential clients or existing customers seeing that photo of you having too much to drink at your best friend's birthday party. Whilst I don't have a problem with you letting your hair down at the weekend I am sure that your clients do. I am sure that drunken photos are really not the professional look that you were going for. If you set up a Facebook Fan Page people can become Fan's of your page to get company information but you can also have your personal page for your friends and family. If you keep your business life and your personal life separate you will find that you do not have any of these problems.
Twitter (through a twitter client)- I love Twitter. Twitter is a great way to get your message out but also do research. I use Tweetdeck because I need to manage multiple accounts and send tweets to different followers at different times however there are different platforms that you can used depending on personal preference.
