, Sybilla Masters is one of the first women who was recognized and paid credit for her invention. As per the records she was given a patent for the method of making cornmeal from maize in 1715. Because women were not allowed to enjoy the front seat during those days, she received the patent in her husband's name with the patent stating that method was found by his wife, Sybilla Masters.

Next on the list is Nobel Prize winner, Gertrude Belle Elion. Gertrude Elion, an American biochemist and also a pharmacologist devoted her life in discovering new medicines. She was successful in discovering many new drugs including the drugs for AIDS, AZT for which she received Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1988. Along with scientist George H. Hitchings she contributed hugely in the field of medicine by inventing medicines for leukemia, gout, malaria, herpes and many other diseases. In addition, she also developed the first immune-suppressive agent used in organ transplants. Apart from Nobel Prize she also won National Medal of Science in 199 and the Lemelson-MIT Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. Gertrude Elion left us in 1999 at the age of 81.

Linda B. Buck is a prominent American women inventor, who won a Nobel Prize in medicine. A PhD holder in immunology from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, Linda Buck also holds a post doctoral degree from Columbia University She is known for her work on the olfactory system. Along with another renowned scientist Richard Axel she was able to make notary inventions in the olfactory system, for which she received Nobel Prize in 2004. She is also one of the few scientists who got inducted to National Academy of Sciences in 2004.

Anita B. Roberts is another well known name in the list of American Women Inventors. Anita Roberts is a famous Molecular Biologist, who made pioneer observations in the field of medicine about the protein, TGF- (transforming growth factor beta). Through her studies and research she was able to prove the critical role that protein plays in healing wounds and bone fractures. Her studies also revealed that protein TGF- helps in blocking or stimulating cancer. Though, in her later studies it was found that while TGF- inhibits the growth of some form of cancers, it stimulates the growth in advanced cancers like cancer of the breast and lung. She also found that TGF- has an effect on regulating heartbeat and eye's response to aging. Anita B. Roberts who has made some astonishing discoveries in biology completed her PhD in biochemistry from the University of WisconsinMadison in 1968 and did her postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Roberts is yet another popular name who has made amazing contributions in the science field including FASEB Excellence in Science Award, Leopold Griffuel Prize and Komen Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction. In 2005, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, prior to which was holding the position of president in the Wound Healing Society.
