Festivals reflect the culture and tradition of a place. South India basks its golden history with the colourful and vibrant festivals. Tourists get a good chance to understand the cultural heritage of this great land. There are some important South India festivals that bring a large number of travelers from across the globe to this place and have fun. Each festival has its own meaning and importance. Onam is a major festival celebrated in Kerala. It falls in the month of Chingam as per the Malayalam calendar. It is believed that King Mahabali, who was a former ruler of this place, returned on this very day and so every the people celebrate to welcome their god. Onam festival is a ten day festival when people celebrate their joy and forget all their worries. The houses are decorated with fresh flowers. On the first day of Onam artistic Pookalam (flower mat) is laid in front of every house. Tenth day of the festival is the main Onam. The people visit temples to offer their prayers. The best part of the festival is the boat racing. Thumbi Tullal and Thiruvathirakali are the traditional dances which tell about the cultural heritage of Kerala.

Another great festival of South India is the Chithirai festival celebrated in the world famous Madurai temple. This festival begins on the 5th day in the month of Chithirai. The main events happen around the 8th, 9th and 10th day of the festival. On the 8th day there is coronation of Meenakshi and one can witness the processions on silver thrones. 9th day is celebrated as the Digvijaya festival. On the 10th day, which is on Chitra Purnima, the wedding of Meenakshi temple and Sundareswarar takes place. Ther, which is the Chariot festival, is celebrated on the 11th day of the annual festival. This festival is celebrated with merry making and harmony. It attracts tourists from far and wide. This is one of the grandest South India festivals. It is also the best time to visit the place as one get detailed knowledge about the cultural background of the place.

Tamil Nadu, an important state of South India, is not only famous for its beauty but also for its bliss of festivity. Festivals bring delight and happiness to the lives of the people. One major festival of Tamil Nadu is the Pongal festival which is a four day festival to celebrate harvest. It is celebrated in the month of January. Cleaning the houses and destroying the old and unwanted things are an important part of this festival. The first day of the festival is known as Bhogi. The second day of the festival is called Surya Pongal. On this day Chakkara Pongal, which is prepared with new rice, jaggery, dry fruits, sugar and milk, is being offered to the Sun God. Maatu Pongal is celebrated on the third day followed by Kannum Pongal on fourth day. Visitors enjoy a lot as this is a very unique experience.
