Stainless Steel Rebar To Overcome Life Cycle Costs Of Concrete Structures
A rebar or reinforcing bar is a common piece of metal rod whose sole purpose is to
hold the cement concrete in compression by acting as a countervailing agent in the reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures and buildings. Usually concrete has a very strong compression properties but to some extent they are weak in tension. To neutralize for this discrepancy in concretes properties, a rebar is molded into it, which can act as an extensible load. In addition to this, a rebar has ridges for better anchoring mechanism into the concrete.
However, despite casting the rebar into the concrete, these building and structures weakens earlier than anticipated due to oxidation of rebars. This had rather became challenging both technically and economically. A recent survey showed that there are several countries all across the world who spends millions and millions of money in order to repair these decaying structures. The report also showed some cases, where the whole structure was needed to be replaced because of oxidized rebars. All these replacement or repairs caused significant disturbance as well as hazards and monetary losses, which were considered as a big loss to the countrys economy.
After significant research, it was concluded that the reason for corrosion or oxidation of rebars was its contact with chloride from water and deicing salt from the structure. Like every other metal, it is natural for carbon steel rebars to easily corrode from chloride and salt. As a result, rust forms on the rebar inside the concrete which occupies more volume on metal then it was before. Thus, because of this a brute force that exceed the ductile strength of the concrete is created, resulting in cracking and crumbling of the concrete structures and buildings.
To address this situation, researches started to work on the following five strategies:
I.Develop dense concrete that would prevent chloride and salt to enter into the structure.
II.Confine corrosion with cathodic protection or chemical compound.
III.Develop special coating for the concrete structure itself.
IV.Develop non-metallic rebar.
V.Develop high corrosive resistant metal rebar.
After eliminating unfeasible and expensive strategies, the researchers opted for the 5th strategy develop high corrosive resistant metal rebar.
The only high corrosive resistance and inexpensive metal available today is stainless steel. Stainless steel rebars have very high corrosion resistance along with good strength and ductile properties. Furthermore, these stainless steel rebar have good low and high temperature mechanical properties making them ideal for any weather condition. These stainless steel reinforcing bar can definitely cut the life cycle costs of various concrete structures and buildings in any country.
