Starcraft 2 Guide - Basic Guide for Beginners

Starcraft 2 is much like its predecessor, Starcraft

, and Starcraft: Broodwar. The game centers around three different races: Terran, Zerg, and Protoss. Each race has its own tricks and things to learn, special abilities that are unique to that race, and tactics to keep in mind. Always remember that you need to have enough supply to build up your forces, and to mix both air and ground defenses. The easiest way to lose is to forget about air defenses.

Terran Guide:

The terran's are the basic humans, the ones that the campaign Wings of Liberty stands around. Unlike the other two races, terran can attack both ground and air with their basic units. Build at least two barracks to pump out your units quickly. Don't discount medic's either, take at least one medic for every four to six other ground units. Build plenty of SCV's as well, they are responsible for gathering the resources you need, focusing on minerals and branching slowly into vespene to produce the powerful air units.

Zerg Guide:

Zerg are a little different to handle than the other two races. All of their units are built out of the hatchery, from the larva that spawn occasionally. The queen unit can cast a spell on the hatchery to make batches of larva spawn faster. This allows you to build in groups, rather than one by one. Zerg tend to be very mineral heavy, since a lot of their units are disposable. They do not naturally have air defenses, so make sure you build hydralisks, the only ground to air zerg unit, relatively quickly. Overlords are the zerg version of supply, use them to scout, as they can fly around. Zerg buildings can only be built on creep, which is generated by creep tumors and the hive. Zerg regenerate health, faster if they are on creep.

Protoss Guide:

Protoss are heavy hitters, all of their units are expensive, but strong. Also, as a very vespene heavy race, they need both mineral and vespene as fast as you can gather it. Pylons supply both the power for buildings and your units. The more pylons you have the more units you can build. If a pylon is destroyed, the buildings nearby will go offline. Protoss are unique in that they have shields, which regenerate slowly when out of battle, and make them far more durable.
