Stargazing has recently become more popular thanks to a few celebrities showing off the beauty of it in a recent TV program. But just how easy is it to get into? How much equipment do you need? And is it even possible to see the true wonders of the night sky in the UK?
Of course you could buy all of the top range astronomical telescopes and high-powered binoculars but, for most people starting out in the area, simple equipment will do. Most people will find that as they get more into the hobby, the amount of equipment they buy and lug around will increase. However, for a beginner a simple pair of binoculars will do.
Luckily for us, although some areas of the UK have been so heavily light polluted there is no point even trying to look at the sky, there are plenty of areas where you can still see the stars in all of their glory. Areas near cities are most likely out as you need the sky to be as dark as possible. However, you don't have to travel to the depths of Scotland to see some amazing night time skies.
The Lake District, North Yorkshire Moors and Cornwall have all had their skies voted as dark enough to truly enjoy a breath-taking night sky. National parks are also a great place to start, as well as many remote areas in Wales.
So just how do you get started? Many places will offer beginner's courses that might help you learn where to look. There are also plenty of websites and books showing you exactly how to start.
However one of the best ways is just to get out there and give it a go. You'll be surprised at what even you can spot on your first night of properly looking at the sky.
