Education in figures

Education in figures

Developing countries have been expanding its education system and have impressive figures in terms of its growth. Today, the literacy rate is around seventy five percent, up from twenty percent since the fifties. The population in the world has grown more than three times the base population of the fifties and the literacy rate has grown by at a higher rate. Today there are many schools in every country as well as above institutions which can award degrees. There are thousands of colleges and there are over millions of students who are enrolled in schools across the globe. In terms of higher education, the participation is sixteen to seventeen percent and that leads to a very complex education system globally. Countries have many brilliant professionals today, fruits of the educational system worldwide. However, the primary and higher level education and teaching still needs to come upto mark. The quality of education suffers in our country. Many children who have passed grade five have been found unable to show the adequate learning levels of grade two and many who are graduates in general are found inadequately qualified to take up shop floor assignments in factories and industries.

Quality of education declines

That brings forth the question of the quality of our education system, that of our teachers and the proficiency of our teaching community. Since the medieval times the world is known to worship their teachers. Teachers are known to be figures of great learning and knowledge whose authority are not to be questioned. Thus, the decline in the quality of education and teaching is surprising and disheartening. The question then arises that whether the teachers are being trained adequately in teachers colleges? The infrastructure to train them, is it adequate and the quality of teachers recruited is it as per required level? There is also a lack of motivation for teaching these days, most talented people are choosing other promising sectors and careers and teaching is becoming a second choice for most. Those who are not getting into lucrative MBA programs and are forced to take up further studies and research, seek teaching as a means of livelihood and to sustain their months of research and fellowship. It is simply a means of getting by or whiling the time while one gets the right degree or PH.D and can move onto more lucrative corporate jobs. Since private corporate jobs are highly paid, the focus is towards this sector in general.

Better teachers required

The status of teachers is on the decline and less talented people are getting in the profession. A job which is highly valuable and indispensable for training and nurturing the talents for the future, it is the prerogative of the decision making authorities to make teaching a more lucrative and distinguished profession and provide better teachers colleges globally. Once the lost glamour is established, more worthy people will take the role of teachers and claim back the honor and prestige that the profession once demanded.
