Strange Psychology Of The Mayport Monster
People can do some very horrible things, as evidenced by the man who gave himself the title of the Mayport Monster
. William E. Wells murdered his wife along with four other people in his trailer in 2003, and then continued to live with the dead bodies and his living 4-year-old son for several days. He went to trial and received five life sentences. He had a sixth life sentence added when he attempted to murder another inmate of the Miami-Dade Correctional Institution in 2008. When asked about the attempted murder, Wells stated he was on a mission for the death penalty.
Now he and another man, Wayne C. Doty, are charged with the murder of another man in prison. However, something strange is happening between these partners in crime. They are having their very own war of words, each trying to seem more evil and rotten than the other is. Doty claims that if Wells really wanted the death penalty he wouldve asked for it during his trial. He also claims that Wells didnt want to see any blood and wanted to convince Doty not to stab the victim.
Wells, on the other hand, talks about his heinous deeds with pride, and says that he is going to continue trying to get the death penalty. Both Doty and Wells pleaded not guilty to the murder of the inmate, which seems odd for someone who wants to get the death penalty. Forensic psychologists are trying to understand the motivation of these offenders and others like them.
Many different psychological issues could be at play. One theory is that Wells and Doty have large egos, and they like the attention that they get when they are on trial and in the public eye. If they were to plead guilty, they would not have a trial that had the potential to go on for a long while. Are they trying to get attention? Are they trying to create reasonable doubt in the jury? Its difficult to determine for certain, but you can be sure psychologists are going to be working overtime trying to understand what is happening with these criminals.
One thing seems relatively certain. If Wells were serious about wanting to receive the lethal injection, he would be pleading guilty to the murder and not playing some game with the legal system. In this case, it seems as though the suspects might just be trying to out crazy one another and the legal system.
