Strategies for Getting the Most from Your Goal Setting Book

You've made the decision to take your goals to the next level by using a goal book

. Now that you have your hands on this robust, time-tested and powerful tool, here are five strategies to help you get the absolute most from your goal book.

Establish Exactly What You Want. Before you plunge into your goal book, think carefully about what it is you want to achieve. Do you desire to be in better shape? Write out exactly what kind of shape you want to be in. Make your goals as specific as possible so that the end point of your goal is clear as day.

Be Willing to Be Flexible. Open yourself to the possibility that things will not go exactly to plan. All too often we abandon our goals the first time we hit a roadblock or setback! Use your goal book to allow for these moments where things will not go our way.

Ruthlessly Evaluate. You should evaluate not only your defeats, but also your victories. Why did things go well in one instance, and not well in another? Understand why things didn't work, and do your best to apply these lessons in the future. Use the procedures and techniques that are working for you; spread what's working across the rest of your goal-setting steps, and success will spread like wildfire.

Measure Your Progress and Ignite Your Motivation. Seeing how far we have come should light the fire under your bottom to keep on pushing. Conversely, when you see that things aren't happening as fast as you'd like, take the opportunity to readjust your goals as necessary. Remember, it's the journey that will ultimately shape you, not the destination!

Be Consistent. Start small if you have to. Set aside 30 minutes a day where you do nothing but focus on your ultimate goal. In your goal book outline exactly what you are going to do for each day. By getting into the habit of acting daily, soon you will be able to push that 30 minutes into an hour, an hour into two hours, and so on. Don't overwhelm yourself at the beginning. Usually a big goal means a lot of work. Start small, enjoy those first few steps, and you will avoid the burn-out and sense of being completely daunted that people who blindly dive into their goals often fall prey to.
