Studies In Surrey Show More People May Need Residential Treatment Programme For Thier Alcohol Issues

A study in Surrey was undertaken recently regarding the affects of alcohol and older people

.

There is so much on the news and in the media about teenage drinking and drug abuse and how much young people are increasingly becoming dependent on drink and drugs that many people are forgetting that there is still an older generation who have a problem with alcohol.

The Surrey study showed that people over 65 drink approximately half the quantity of alcohol than the whole population. Some people think that as people get older, they will simply grow out of this predicament. There is a lot of confusion around this.

Older people with a developed drink problem will probably have more significant health issues than those of younger people.

It found that older people with alcohol dependency tend to be more prone to accidents and as alcohol affects the mind, it can cloud their judgement. The risk of taking a fall is also increased.

Excessive use of alcohol can lead to mental impairment and the effect on an older person can be similar to dementia. For some people, as they get older, they find they need to drink more and more to achieve the same level of feeling that they once did drinking less in the past. Everyone's ability to drink a certain level of alcohol can be determined by their physical condition.

As the study in Surrey shows, for anyone drinking, regardless of age, we can lose control. It can cloud our judgment at times and where we can immediately spot danger in the cold light of day, under the influence of alcohol, we are likely to take more risks. People can end up in dangerous situations that they would normally never get into, if it wasn't for the influence of alcohol.

There is plenty of support and network services in Surrey that can give you help and advice on drink related issues. There are also a number of private rehab clinics in the county where for those people with a dependency to alcohol, they are able to seek help on a residential treatment programme. Some people, on entering a rehabilitation clinic, may need to undergo a detoxification programme. This will be decided after the initial assessment is carried out. After detoxification, the person with the alcohol dependency can then embark on a treatment programme which should give them hope and will help them stay off the drink for good.
