Touching free weights won't automatically make you inflate and become a body builder lookalike. Men build muscle much faster than women and it's takes extreme dedication and hard work for them to get big.
Lifting weights will help your body build lean muscle which in turn increase your metabolism and practically forces your body to shed fat, even while you're not working out! Weight lifting is hands down the easiest way for women to lose body fat and get a flat stomach, so go for it!
Start out small by doing light weight-lifting exercises like squats, dead lifts, bench press, and rows. If you don't know how to do these exercises, find someone who does and learn from them!
A nice bonus from doing these exercises is that they also engage the lower back and stomach muscles, which will help your midsection look firmer than ever. Plus your body will be healthier because of it, giving you better posture and a stronger core.
I would challenge you to try it out for a couple months and see if you like the results. I find weight lifting to be much more fun than jogging anyway! I think you'll like how you look too, building lean muscle gives your whole body a tighter look and will help you with any 'saggy' spots on your body.
