Syphilis Symptoms and Prevention

In the second stage of the disease, skin rashes will appear. These can show up in the palms or on the soles of an infected person's foot. There are also cases when the rash would cover the entire body. Again, this will last for weeks and would eventually disappear. If an infected person engages in sexual contact during this stage, he or she can spread the infection to their sex partners.

These rashes are also accompanied by flu-like symptoms like fatgue, mild fever, headache, patchy hair loss, sore throat and swollen lymph glands. If untreated, the disease will lapse t the latent stage where the infected person is no longer contagious to others. However, as the disease progresses, the infection can develop complications that can affect or damage the brain, eyes, heart, bones, joints, nervous systems and other parts of the body. This can even last for decades.

During the final stage of the disease, the infected person can suffer from heart disease, mental illness, blindness and worse, death. Pregnant women can even transmit the disease of their unborn child - resulting to babies with serious physical and mental health problems.

Since the first two stages of syphilis have very mild symptoms, most people infected by the syphilis bacterium don't seek treatment. Since the body is becoming weak or brittle as the disease progresses, there is even a possibility that a person with syphilis can get infected with AIDS. This is since the open sores make it easier for the AIDS virus to go inside the body.

Prevention vs. Treatment of Syphilis

Like all other diseases and conditions, prevention is still so much better than finding a cure. Since the symptoms are mild and since doctors are saying syphilis is curable, people are assuming its okay to practice unsafe sex. Yes, it is curable but if there is one thing you need to know about the syphilis bacterium - it is the fact that once it enters the body, it stays there. Doctors can make it dormant with shots and medication but the strain stays. Sooner or later it can relapse and cause damage to important organs of the body.

The best defense is still to practice safe sex, to stay faithful to your spouse or partner and to avoid multiple sex partners. Be cautious of the people you sleep with. You can never tell if a person has STD or syphilis at first glance. However, you can use condoms to protect yourself. It is also wise to refrain from French kissing people you don't really know.

For those who are diagnosed with infectious syphilis, make it your civic duty to abstain from sexual activity until you are rendered non-infectious after antibiotic therapy.

Couples should talk with their partner about STDs, hepatitis B and HIV/AIDS which can be transmitted through unprotected sex. If you are sexually active, consider using latex condoms as a preventive measure. Of course, you also need to use it correctly and consistently. Condoms can only protect covered parts. It is a good idea for men and women to wash the exposed parts with soap and water after contact.
