The very first thing you need to know in order to teach yourself Spanish is to know that Spanish's noun has different gender and in accordance to the gender, the articles (a, the) of the word will change.

Before diving into the articles of nouns, there is a important point about the masculine and feminine nouns that you need to know. Many Spanish beginner learners think that the gender of the noun is not based on common perceptions of which noun is considered masculine or feminine.

A very good example would be dress. Many would assume that dress is considred a feminine noun but it is actually considered masculine.

Therefore, if you face a noun and is unsure of its gender, do no simply jump to conclusion based on assumptions. The best way to go about finding the gender of the noun is to look up the Spanish dictionary. The Spanish dictionary will have the initials m or f to let you know the gender of the noun.

To many new learners, this can be rather confusing. If you find it confusing, perhaps you can think of the gender of the nouns simply as two different categories rather than looking at it as a sexual identity.

Along with the different gender form, there is a different article for the feminine and masculine form.

For masculine nouns, "the" is el while la is for feminine nouns. So, the man will be el hombre while the woman would be la mujer.

Lastly, for masculine nouns, "a" is un while una is for feminine nouns. Using the same example of man and woman, a man is un hombre while a woman is una mujer.

If you want to learn Spanish fast, you will need to find a program that can teach you the basic grammar, and vocabularly along with basic conversational Spanish. With a good program, you will be able to learn Spanish fast.
