Teaching Your Children About Racism - 6 Things To Remember When Teaching A Child About Racism

Racism to some people is an ancient term; however

, the truth is it still exists today. The important thing for parents to do is to teach their children about racism. It is best to be honest with children so they will understand what they could witness or run into themselves. Talking with a child about racism is important and so is living a life free of racism and instilling strong self awareness values in your children. Below are six things to keep in mind when teaching a child about racism.

1.When speaking to a child about racism remember that you are speaking to a child and not an adult that has seen several examples of racism in their life and in current events. Keep the conversation honest, but age appropriate. Don't give children examples of violent acts that could really scare them, instead let them know the word has a negative meaning but that most people are not racist.

2.One of the most important things to do is to be a positive role model as a parent. A child that you've told about the negativity of racism becomes quickly confused when this same parent makes a comment that is racist. It is not appropriate to teach a child about racism being a negative way to think, but then still make comments about one particular race that are negative.

3.Something else to remember when teaching your children about racism is that they can learn by being exposed to diversity. Putting children in situations where there are different races allows them to grow up knowing about other races and not having any beliefs that anything is wrong with being different.

4.A parent will also need to remember that teaching their children to love themselves helps them realize they are OK, no matter what they may hear. When a child has a strong sense of identity, derogatory comments will not hurt them in the same way as they would a child with a low self esteem.

5.Teaching children about other races and their cultures will allow them to see that other races are different but that we are all human beings. Globes can be used to show where this race originated and telling them about an interesting custom the race may have will most likely keep your child interested in the topic.

6.It is also important to teach children to treat others as they want to be treated. If they learn to respect people in general, they will not want to say derogatory or cruel comments or leave anyone out of play groups no matter their race.
