In Tears in Heaven, Donald, the author, incorporates extensive Bible research in this unique tale of raptured souls residing in heaven. The narrative centers around the biblical passage, "God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." (Revelation 21:4) In other words, believers who leave earth for heaven will return to eternal paradise, with no sorrow or despair; however, Donald the narrator, despite being in heaven, suffers and pines for unrequited love.
Donald is portrayed as socially awkward and hypersensitive, resulting in a life of solitude on earth. On his way to heaven, for instance, Donald runs into Jennifer, his teenage crush. After seeing the anguish of unrequited love in Donald's life, Jennifer states, "Of course, of course, you can see me when you want to, now that we're here in heaven. But, you need to find a way to move on. What sort of heaven is this, if we're here just to torture each other?" This passage is linked to God's promise of happiness and a pain-free heaven, demonstrating the self-loathing that plagues Donald.
Donald distracts himself temporarily in the company of the goddess Thalia, the muse of comedy. A flood of tears encompasses Donald while Jesus is reviewing Donald's life. It is revealed that there is one more addition, a posthumous work, to Donald's life review, in which he writes a book in heaven and sends it back to earth, creating a wave of doubt in believers. The problem is that this book is written in the future, and thus, has not been written at the time of judgment.
Stating that everyone has a job in heaven, Jesus appoints Donald as counselor to the recent arrivals who are not happy with their time in heaven. More specifically, Jesus states, "Some people who have recently come to heaven, for whatever reason, do not feel that things are going well. I would like you to counsel them." Donald's endeavor finds him interacting with terrorists, a woman who wants hell over heaven, an anorexic, a Chinese martyr, and a war victim. Through all these interactions, Donald's own perception and disappointment with heaven are transformed.
Ultimately, Tears in Heaven explores Donald's efforts to wipe away the tears in heaven. The Book of Revelation states that former things are passed away; however, the conundrum and disgruntled behavior in heaven spawns from souls remembering their lives on earth-conflicted with emotion. Tears in Heaven is a must-read-an interesting narrative and riveting storyline for all audiences to enjoy.
