The Absolute Importance Of Continuing Medical Education For Doctors

, an integral ingredient in the continued well-being of our civilization. When you get right down to it, our doctors are the only thing standing between us and the end of the world as we know it. No, that's not as melodramatic as it might sound. Bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi outnumber us a few billion to one. They're everywhere. They're more adaptable. They're more ruthless. They don't understand that tipping the balance of nature isn't going to end the way they want it to.

All this surrounds us even before chronic illnesses like diabetes and the debilitation of aging sets in. Our physicians are to us like Saint George Slaying the Dragon. They are our first line of defense between us and the unseen enemy we can't fight. New threats to our health come up almost every day. Considering this, the need for keeping our doctors armed and standing at the forefront of the battle is crucial. The only means to making that happen is through continuing medical education.

Continuing Medical Education Is...?

Those in the field of medicine are intimately aware of the challenges and the critical need for continuing their medical education. If you do not know about continuing education, you better be darn sure that your doctor does.

When you go looking for a physician of your own, are you more likely to choose the one that just graduated from medical school or the one that's been practicing since you were in nappies? I can tell you that when I had kids, the first person I called when I was home visiting and one of them got sick, was my old pediatrician. The man's been practicing medicine so long, he's forgotten more than most new doctors will ever learn.

The medical field is a rapidly changing one. There are new drugs on the market and new technologies appearing that enable doctors to treat conditions only dreamed of forty years ago. There are new conditions being diagnosed at a dizzying rate. A doctor who obtained a degree from medical school 20, 30 or 40 years ago would not know any of this and that lack of knowledge could lead to serious even fatal treatment decisions.

Continuing Medical Education Comes In Here

A doctor must never stop learning. They cannot afford to. They never know when a discovery will come out of a research lab or a remote village somewhere in the world that could be the answer to a longer life with a better quality than ever before. This enhanced quality of daily life may apply to any or all of the patients who walk into their doctor's office every day. The ideal situation would be for doctors to have the time to read medical journals, attend conferences and symposiums to stay on top of changes.

The world is not perfect and it is a world where most doctors regularly work ten to twelve hour days. A world where meals are skipped, their kid's soccer games go by without them and sound sleep is rare. No matter what conference they would like to attend, it goes slipping away without them.

This is the reason the AMA mandates their physicians complete a certain number of continuing medical education units every year to keep their licenses. This is their way of ensuring you that your doctors have what they need to give you and your family the treatment options you need to maintain a healthy life. It also provides doctors the necessary peace of mind to soundly sleep those six or so hours of sleep a night knowing they have the weapons at hand to keep the battle going their way.
