Lan Na' which means a million rice fields' is a 13th century kingdom in the vibrant city of Thailand which was founded by King Mengrai in the year 1259 and established his capital in Chiang Mai in 1291. Kamthieng House, which was originally built by the great granddaughter of a Prince of Muaeng Chae, in the year 1848, on the banks of Ping River in Chiang Mai province, this museum is truly an icon of Lan Na heritage and lifestyle.

In order to preserve this culture for the future generations, this house was donated by Mae Nai Haw to the Siam Society as an ethnological museum. Kamthieng house, which was named after Mae Nai's mother; Mae Kamthieng is a timber house with the traditional rare example of Lan Na architecture. The "Kalae" or "V" shaped wooden carving on the apex of the gable can also be found here. Following the donation, it took two years to plan, dismantle and move this house from the old location of Chiang Mai to the grounds of Siam City in Bangkok.
