This place was first explored by the French explorer named Henry Hudson who discovered it while finding a trade route for East.The river was named after the Hudson who was the first settler of the area.It is the oldest European settlement with thirteen colonies.

On 22 July 1686,the then Governor Thomas Dongan granted a charter recognizing it as the city.Pieter Schuyler was the first mayor of the city appointed by Dongan.During the Eighteenth century,many European traders were attracted to the city considering it as the major trading location and eventually settled down in the area.
