A good sleep is hard to find. Choosing the best combination of mattress and bed base that is ideal for you and also your partner can take not only a concerted research but possible trial runs and even a few mistakes. So let's go over the basics. The main types of mattresses available include inner spring, latex, memory foam, wool and cotton. The latter two are natural fibres but can end up being very hard and uncomfortable if not produced or cared for properly. Inner spring mattresses have been around since the 1930s and it used to be considered that the more coils a bed had the harder it was, so the better the sleep. But as coil technology improved coil numbers reduced and people also began to realise that most people don't sleep on their backs or stomach. A softer inner spring mattress resulted. The support/comfort ratio has come up again with the advent of the memory foam mattress, or simply memory mattress. Memory foam shares a shape-conforming ability with the latex mattress, through latex is a natural material and memory foam was a chemical construction developed by NASA for their space program. Memory foam and latex mould to your body, offering support where it is needed and conversely becoming softer when more weight is applied. Latex is derived from rubber though may use chemicals in the production process. Likewise memory Foam is 100% chemical and can have a strong smell when first used. Natural latex is the best option for sensitive sleepers. Cotton or wool mattresses can be 100% natural or used in combination with any of the materials above. Some inner spring mattresses use cotton in their construction to increase softness. Other cotton mattresses may add a layer of springs to provide a more defined mattress and a softer sleep. Beds have come a long way and the range of options can be overwhelming so stick to the basics. The three essential factors to investigate are your sensitiveness to chemicals, your preference for the degree of support/give and your requirement for softness.About the Author:
