Many people blanch at the idea of staying in an airport hotel, but the truth is that many people's conception of these hotels is outdated. Nowadays, airport hotels are just as luxurious and welcoming as the hotel you're going to be staying at on your city break - and in a highly convenient location if you happen to be delayed.

The volcanic ash cloud that got in the way of millions of people's travel plans during 2010 still hasn't quite gone away yet, with some flights still experiencing disturbances as flakes of debris are filtered through the air. Even without the annoyance of the ash clouds, bad weather can still frequently take over the controls on the air strip, meaning storms and excessive rain, poor visibility or other types of bad weather end up having the final say on whether or not a plane takes off or not. And if you're the victim of this bullying weather, the chances are you're all too aware of how frustrating it can be to see your flight being pushed back again and again, sometimes even to the next day or later. The ash cloud even stranded people in far flung destinations for weeks at a time, forcing them to stay in wait at their location, unable to get home as planes simply couldn't take off.

If you do end up getting stranded at an airport, it's more than worth considering staying at the airport hotel over anything else. It may be tempting to simply head home or even stay in the airport, but anybody who's ever slept in an airport before tends not to recommend it: it's uncomfortable and many airports use special chairs that mean people cannot stretch out on them and try to sleep: you have to stay awake all night.

That's why it's far more convenient to spend a night at the airport hotel. Many of these are equipped with spacious rooms, comfortable beds, nice bathrooms and all of the usual amenities you'd expect. Plus, thanks to their far-flung location, the airport hotel tends to be far less expensive than other hotels in the city itself, meaning you won't have to expect a big fee when you check in. Airport hotels really don't cost too much and this only adds to their convenience as a place to stay when you're delayed.

By staying in airport hotels you can be sure of a good night's sleep and being in a much better mood when your plane finally does take off - meaning a far better start to your holiday. And since you're jetting off for some relaxation and rest, the chances are you'd prefer that over a night stressing out at the airport, right?
