The Dangers of Starving Yourself to Lose Weight
Crash dieting (the practice of starving yourself to lose weight) is one of the few trends people should not do when it comes to weight loss. Aside from the workout routines that come with it, these types of diets do more harm to the human body than good. From low metabolism and energy to dehydration and loss of appetite, crash dieting has the potential to put you in the hospital before you get a chance to see if your old jeans fit again.
Most of the time, many people on crash diets confuse weight loss and fat loss with loss of water weight. Sure, you may not look as bloated as you did 3 weeks ago but it's not permanent and can be gained back really quickly. Also, losing too much water weight can lead to dehydration, which comes with side effects such as chills, headaches, loss of appetite, and dry skin/mouth.
One thing to remember when trying to lose weight is that eating less slows down your metabolism. The slower it is, the less weight you lose over time. Most nutritionists tell their patients and others to have at least five small meals a day, which will boost your metabolism and help your lose weight faster and properly.
While physical workouts help induce weight loss, it's important to have enough energy to keep your body going. Most crash diets not only encourage people to eat less, but come with workout regiments that are almost impossible to do. Many have had to go seek medical treatment for fatigue, exercise-related injuries and other serious health problems.
Crash diets have one other side effect: decreased muscle tone. In other words, the less food you eat the more your body starts to attack itself. This is also a common issue with those who suffer from eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.
Some of the people who create crash diets are usually individuals who lost weight this way and decide to sell it to other who want to lose weight. This also explains why the diets and workouts don't make any sense to those who achieved weight loss in a different way. In most cases, it's just a plan that somebody decides to sell so they can make a quick buck off of the general public.
The reality about weight loss is that no single diet will work for everyone. Just because someone is overweight (or even morbidly obese) doesn't mean their problems are related to what they eat everyday. It could be related to their metabolism, genetics, or just an overall lack of physical activity.
If you wish to learn more about the best weight loss methods, consult your doctor to find out which diets and workout regiments will work in your favor. Crash dieting may sound promising, but it never helps you lose weight in a healthy way. In fact, you'd have a better chance at losing weight by eating fast food and running a mile everyday than you would by following these types of diets.
