The first thing that comes to mind upon hearing the words 'septic tank' are that of disgust and an overall feeling of muckiness

. Serving their purpose in homes everywhere are septic tanks even if they are often seen as nothing but filth considering these connotations. I think it would be interesting to find that the grotty reputations of these tanks are actually undeserved and they are often misjudged.

Not only do sewage systems rely heavily on septic tanks but every family's home is also dependent on these. Actually, everything will be different if we did not have these. Aside from understanding what a septic tank does, it is important to define it first.

Considered as key components in sewage systems, septic tanks are the concrete tanks normally buried in yards that act by holding waste water from homes. Any liquid that goes down the drain becomes waste water and this is accumulated from toilets, showers, and sinks. Starting their passage from the septic tank through the sewage system are these liquids.

Involved in septic tanks are two tanks that can hold up to 2,000 gallons of liquid each. Separated by a wall, there are two chambers in modern tank designs where one chamber is where the waste products settle. You can say that one of the key concepts of the process is the chamber separation concept.

The first chamber is entered by the water where solid components settle at the bottom and various scum to float on the top. After the solids are anaerobically digested, the water volume changes. Actually, the term septic comes from the development of an anaerobic environment within the tank. Drained away into a leech field is the cleared liquid after what remains of the liquid enters the second chamber where settlement again takes place. Unpleasant odours would be a more common aromam everything would reek of waste matter. Causing a decrease in population are E.coli outbreaks that can suffice in a situation like this one.

Considering that septic tanks are not present, these are only a few of the problems we can expect. This just goes to show how much we have depended on this device to make our lives more convenient. Ridding the lowly septic tank of its undeserved grotty reputation is something we should consider.
