The Future Of Education: How Writing Exercises Will Save Our Schools

The state of education in the United States has long been lamented

. Test scores are far from where they need to be and more and more kids are simply flunking out, rather than battling down and planning for their college education. Compared to other advanced nations, the success rate is far from where it needs to be, yet recently educators in Massachusetts helped to underline the importance of writing exercises, as part of a drive to improve results.

One out of every three high school students in Massachusetts, according to statistics, would fail to pass state sanctioned exams. This was a grim statistic, with no end in sight. Several teachers believed that writing exercises could draw together the fabric of their schools, when included as part of a student's daily educational diet.

If writing exercises were incorporated into every single teaching period, across the board, educators felt that they would see significant results. Indeed, they were right. In less than the space of a year the pilot school was recording statewide test results far ahead of other, similar establishments. After a few years, results had snowballed until 90% of the other high schools were left behind.

Once every educator was on board with the concept, writing exercises became a necessary habit. These exercises extended throughout every class, not just English, but into all elements of the curriculum, including physical education.


Students were encouraged to think about what they were doing and then put pen to paper to accurately describe it. By engaging in the written word, they were far more likely to really focus on the subject at hand and much more likely to retain the element of knowledge.


This was a risk for the educators and definitely meant that they were thinking outside of the box. Critics of the idea argued that valuable resources and time, to say nothing of money, were being wasted and that other subjects might suffer at the expense of English. The end result proved them wrong, though, as students became much more motivated across the board. All their skills, not just writing, were enhanced and polished.

There are many lessons to be learned from this real world experience. The art of writing is very important and one which we must all master, in school, business or life. Just think how many times we are called upon today to communicate our thoughts, wants and desires. When was the last time that you ensured that your resume was up to date and well formulated, ready for a new job? In truth, all of us could focus on those Massachusetts writing exercises ourselves, for every application.

In business, communication is paramount. Much of this new age communication is taking place online, virtually and requires us to be very adept at the art of putting pen to paper, or rather finger to keyboard. Article writing, blog post creation, sales page construction and a host of other highly focused writing exercises are important business marketing skills today. High school students in Massachusetts will now be much more prepared for business success tomorrow.
