Electronic cigarettes are slowly gaining ground in the battle for the mindset of smokers and health policy makers

. The reason is not so surprising. Electronic cigarettes are clearly a much better alternative to tobacco products and are perfect for new generations of people steeped in a digital, health-conscious, and environmentally-aware culture.

Electronic cigarettes are perhaps the first tobacco alternative that is powered by a lithium battery, much like the smart phones, cameras, portable gaming consoles, and other electronic products in the Digital Age. The ubiquitous nature of these devices allow for familiarity and easy handling of the electronic cigarette. Basically, electronic cigarettes are composed of five basic components: the mouthpiece, the atomizer, a rechargeable lithium battery, a cartridge or chamber for fluid storage, and the e-liquid.

The electronic cigarette works by heating up the e-liquid using the atomizer. When an e-liquid gets heated up, it easily changes into a clean vapor. While amply flavored, the e-liquid vapor is safe and clean, unlike tobacco smoke that contains hundreds of toxic chemicals. There are also hundreds of e-liquid flavors that are available for users' exploration and enjoyment.

Electronic cigarettes also come in all shapes and sizes that allow for extreme customization and personalization. Similar to cellular phones, electronic cigarette kits can become highly cherished and personal digital devices. There are also dozens of accessories available, turning this clean lifestyle into a viable, exciting hobby. Today, dozens of designs, makes and models of electronic cigarettes are available in the market, from products that look exactly like sticks of traditional tobacco cigarettes to contraptions that look like antique pipes, elegant pens, and customized trinkets. The branding and design possibilities for electronic cigarettes are simply enormous.

The environmental benefits of electronic cigarettes are also considerable. Because tobacco smoking involves burning organic material (tobacco leaves and cigarette paper), carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. This increase the level of greenhouse gases which aggravates global warming. Global warming is a natural process, but when aggravated by human actions, the effects--such as radical climate changes--can be very disastrous to the ecosystem. In addition, tobacco smoking also produces other byproducts such as carbon monoxide, a known air pollutant that can become deadly when ingested in sufficient quantities. Lastly, one of the most repulsive aspects of traditional smoking is the production of cigarette butts as a waste product. Cigarette butts stink and look as toxic as it really is. Besides being an eyesore, cigarette butts trap toxic chemicals that can leach into the soil, poisoning whatever organisms are in there.
