Secondly, because fiber is bulky and stays in the stomach longer, it makes food more satisfying. Thirdly, it slows down the digestion process which causes glucose (sugar) to enter the bloodstream more slowly keeping blood sugar levels at normal levels, a condition wherein it is easier to lose weight. And fourthly, the acids produced when fiber is broken down in the colon nourish the colon lining and at the same time provide fuel for the rest of the body. These acids may also have an important role in metabolism.

A fifth benefit is that fiber supports cardiovascular health by maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. Fiber absorbs cholesterol and other unwanted substances and carries it along when it is flushed out of the body during regular elimination. Lastly, fiber promotes digestive health by sweeping the intestines of toxin build-up and waste matter. In other words, it keeps the digestive tract clean enabling it to function efficiently which is manifested by regularity of bowel movements.


There are numerous studies that support the use of fiber in the prevention and treatment of disease. Practitioners of both conventional and alternative medicine endorse the use of a high-fiber diet as a form of treatment for various health problems. Thus whether one wants to become healthier or needs an effective and natural solution to a disease or health disorder, going on a high-fiber diet is the answer. Foods that are high in fiber include fruits, leafy vegetables, whole grains, beans, broccoli and carrots. Aside from fiber, these foods also contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and cancer fighting phytochemicals.
