There are those who do, so if you ever believe your child has this, you will need to find them. The tests that are given in the hospital cause a baby to be referred to an audiologist if a baby fails it. If the next test is failed, aid devices may be given. If a child has the above disorder, then a device will only hurt him or her.

Unfortunately, many children do not pass their tests and then are given strong aid devices. Sometimes a child does need these. Other times, a child may actually be getting amplification far above what is necessary. These children, rather than having an amplification problem, possibly have a distortion problem called Auditory Neuropathy. Putting strong aid devices in the ears of a child with this disorder could actually ruin the hearing that a child has.

If you have a child who failed his or her initial hearing test at the hospital and is retested, you should consider a few things before choosing an audiologist. You should definitely find one that knows about auditory neuropathy especially if you believe your child could hear. You should also consider an audiologist that is connected to a University so that you know research is being done. Finding someone that specializes in pediatrics is also a good idea. Many audiology clinics do not cater to children.

As your child's advocate, it is important to stand up for what you believe to be true. If they are given a hearing test that says they can hear nothing, yet you see them respond to sounds all of the time; you need to tell the doctors this. If you give in and allow strong hearing aids to be placed, then you might end up hurting your child's ability to hear when it was originally fine.

Some cases are sad, and some children do need the help of a device. Others who have auditory neuropathy may hear well at times while other times not, and a device would be very damaging. Talking knowledgeably to your specialists goes along way. Educate yourself, and the more you do so, the more you will learn from the specialists with whom you talk.

Do not be afraid to get another hearing test even if your child has failed the first two. If you believe your child can hear, then he or she may show it during one of the tests. Your child may be young, but now is the time to be in the habit of doing what is best for them.
