The New Guided Bullet
I have done many articles on new military technology and the advantages that it gives us
. I would like to add another article here about new technology which will give our ground troops a significant advantage on the battlefield.
The key to winning at any war is to create technology, tactics, and intelligence that will give your troops a decided advantage over your opponents. If you can make the odds better in your favor you should be able to overwhelm your opponent. I believe that this new technology will be a game changer. It will undoubtedly be improved as time goes by to make it even better.
The new technology that I am referring to is a bullet that directs itself like a tiny guided missile and can hit a target more than a mile away. Im sure that you can see that this concept will change the game when it comes to us disposing of our enemies on the modern battlefield. The bullet can twist and turn to guide itself toward a laser directed point while making up to 30 corrections per second. The disadvantage to using it is that it requires a laser to paint the target. The upside is tremendous in that this weapon will allow a smaller force to easily hold off a larger one as long as there is a good amount of distance between them.
The bullets are being designed to use with machine guns which will make them even deadlier. I can imagine one scenario for their use where there would be a designated gunner and assistant gunner in each heavy weapons platoon. Their job would be to employ and use this weapon as directed. It should be used in a semi automatic role as well as a fully automatic mode. Even when used as a semiautomatic weapon it would send lethal does of firepower downrange. A large volume of fire would no longer be required just because of the accuracy of the weapon. I could conceive of it being used in a fully automatic role against large enemy formations of people and equipment. Remember that a person will have to de designated to paint the target as the gunner engages it.
Another good point is that it doesnt cost a lot of money to produce this specialty ammunition. This means that it can be employed in greater quantities.
Testing has shown the bullet can reach speeds of 2,400 feet per second. Researchers said they were confident the bullet could reach standard military speeds using customized gunpowder.
The design for the 4-inch-long bullet includes an optical sensor in the nose to detect the laser beam that paints the target. The sensor sends information to guidance and control electronics that use an algorithm in an eight-bit central processing unit to command electromagnetic actuators. These actuators steer tiny fins that guide the bullet to the target.
The technology is good but has yet to be tested by the military. There are some small issues that still need to be worked out. One is the fact the rounds have to be made more durable. Another is that some type of gunpowder has to be used that will increase the velocity of the round.
The addition of this particular piece of technology will be a serious force multiplier for our troops. These bullets can still miss the target but they wont miss many targets.
