Undoubtedly the most eagerly awaited handset release of the year has arrived. After weeks of speculation Apple have launched the iPhone 4, the follow up to last years 3GS.

However this new model not only behaves differently but also boasts a brand new look as well. The release of the new iPhone 4 ties in nicely with Apples annual software update, hence it offers the ios4 operating system. There have been some significant changes to how the software works. At long last multitasking facilities are now offered. What this means for users is that rather than quitting an application to access another, a new process saves your current task at its current point and closes it down. You can then access another area of the phone, then when you are ready to return to the original application, a simple double click of the home button offers you a list of recently used icons, where you can then select what you need and pick up from where you left off. This system will be welcomed by existing iPhone users as well as being attractive to prospective new customers. A unified inbox for e mails is now offered on the phone, meaning several e mail accounts can be managed from a simple and easy to use inbox. The new ios4 software also allows for subtle changes to how menu systems actually look. Background wallpapers can now be added, giving life to the functional but admittedly stale home screen menu system. With Apples iTunes store now offering in excess of two hundred thousand titles, the iPhone 4 cleverly allows users to now categorize icons in fully customisable folders by simply using the drag and drop system. This means photography apps for example can all be stored in one folder rather than scattered across how ever many home screens you have.

The media functions on the iPhone 4 for have been impressively updated. The phone now boasts two cameras, the standard 5 million pixel affair with an improved sensor for richer and more colourful photos. A secondary front facing camera is now included to enable video calling, a feature Apple hopes will really appeal on the unit thanks to it utilising WiFi rather than 3G. Video can be captured at a rate of 30FPS in High Definition quality, and when played back on the phone, the jaw dropping 960 x 640 Retina display shows images in a quality never before seen on a mobile phone. Not only has functionality improved on the iPhone 4, but the sleek new fascia and impressive media features make it a must for any phone fan.
