A Pell Grant is a financial-needs-based Federal government grant that you never have to repay. The Federal government began awarding it in the 1960's and it was named after Claiborne Pell, a United States Senator. The reason behind the creation of this grant was to help poor have the opportunity to receive a college education. Because of this, it is only given to low-income undergraduate students. These grants must be used at one of the 5,400 participating institutions. Your school will use the grant money to pay off your school tuition and fees or pay you directly usually by check. Money is disbursed at least once a semester. Click Here to Browse All Available Scholarships and Grants! Students will also need to show that they are making satisfactory progress with their studies. The Federal Pell Grant eligibility is generally based on the following criteria: 1. Most importantly, you must be in a situation of financial need. Most Pell Grants are paid to students with family incomes of less than $20,000, however there are often exceptions to this. 2. You must either have a high school diploma, GED, or show that you will be able to benefit from the tuition or program that is being offered. 3. You must have a valid Social Security number. 4. The student must be a US citizen or permanent resident, or eligible non-citizen. If you would like to apply for a Federal Pell Grant you can do so on the FAFSA web site. Payment will probably be made by the school you attend and they have various ways of paying the money out. You will have to find this out from the college that you are going to attend.
