The Pure Wit Of House: A Look At The British Humour's Appeal
Now in it's eighth season, Fox's House began in November of 2004
. The show is about a snarky, know-it-all doctor named Gregory House. House is played by the comic genius Hugh Laurie, and one would never guess that Laurie was English all the way when he totally puts his accent to the side for this phenomenal character. The show centers around House and his team of physicians, as well as his bosses, in a hospital in New Jersey, Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital.
Though House often clashes with everyone that works with him, he always seems to get the diagnosis right, at some point. The show basically gives the viewer a medical case in which House and his team need to solve the mystery of what is wrong with the patient. There is then much arguing, testing and misdiagnosing, before House finally saves the patient. Without his creative task team of physicians, though, it seems House wouldn't be as successful a doctor himself. The show has won numerous awards over the years. The main characters hilarious, yet dark humored, one-liners are a draw for viewers. So are the oddball cases that the team takes on.
Though House's current team of physicians isn't consistent of the physicians who worked alongside him at the beginning of the show, the cast of characters is still delightful and work well in unison. No matter how much his team changes though, his boss and his best friend are always by his side. Dr. Lisa Cuddy, the Dean of Medicine, played by Lisa Edelstein, is an one and off love interest to House. Their chemistry, and the sexual tension between them, makes for an interesting tidbit to the show. House's best friend, Dr. James Wilson, the head of the Department of Oncology, played by Robert Sean Leonard, helps viewers see House's human side at times. There friendship is often filled with less give and more take, which puts them on a rocky slope sometimes. Somehow they manage to stay friends.
Fans of drama and doctor related shows are sure to love House, M.D. The show is filled with drama, edge of your seat thrills and comic relief. There is a reason it's been on for so many season, it is pure genius. However, House seems to have forgotten that he actually an English actor, as he admitted recently. It is quite clear where his wit comes from though, and the American audience seem to lap it all up. It is curious how many British actors, such as Hugh Grant, appeal to the US audience, since their humour is chiefly British.
