The Right Way To Light A Cigar Using A Lighter
Smoking cigars is really more of an art form than a pastime
. Doing it correctly requires that you have the right tools and the right knowledge. Knowing how to use your cigar tools is pretty important. One area that new smokers really struggle with is using a cigar lighter to light their smokes. How should you do this? How do you make sure you get a good, even light every time?
Cigars are made drastically different than cigarettes. They are thick and wide while cigarettes are short and skinny. You should avoid using cigarette lighters as a means of lighting your cigar. The flames are too thin, which can lead to an uneven burn on the cigar. A cigarette lighter also uses lighter fluid, which can cause the cigar to have a nasty taste. The best type of lighting source is a flint butane lighter. These have a wide flame designed to give you an even burn without influencing the taste of the cigar.
Next, hold the cigar at a downward 45-degree angle while bringing it within half an inch from the flame. Don't let it touch the flame. Take short puffs on our cigar until you can see that the end is evenly lit. Pull the cigar away from the flame and look at the end of it to make sure that the end is uniformly lit. Blowing on the end of the cigar will help you determine if the entire end is cherry-red. If not, follow the above steps again, but this time focus on the unlit side of the cigar. You can also blow on the end to intensify the burn causing it to spread to the unlit sections. This process will soon become second nature to you.
You should never actually touch the flame of your lighter to the tobacco. Once the end has been heated enough, it will begin lighting on its own. The main thing to remember here is that you will need to continue puffing and rotating throughout the lighting process. When the cigar is fully lit and the smoke is flowing nicely, inspect the end and make sure that it is evenly lit. Look for any signs of running (where the wrapper is burning but not the underlying filler) and take steps to stop it if you find any.
Once you have your cigar lit up, you are ready to begin smoking. Make sure that you have an ashtray nearby. Do not flick the ashes off the cigar, but allow them to fall off into the ashtray naturally.
