The Vital Importance Of Salon Equipment

It's true to say that the real heart of any salon is not the salon equipment

, but the clients and the stylists and employees that work there. But that said, it's pretty much impossible for a salon to operate without the proper tools, which makes them just as important. The equipment you decide upon will shape both your reputation and your clientele, and there is so much to choose from, it's a good idea to decide upon your needs well before you do any shopping.

Hair is often the primary concern of those who step inside, and it should be one of the biggest considerations when you're considering salon equipment. Start with the basics - chairs. We've all sat in one before - the kind of chair that swivels around, can be raised or lowered with the pump of a foot lever - it should be well-padded and comfortable. For added use and flexibility, consider a chair with a removable headrest or removable armrests. You might well be able to do shampoos or manicures or pedicures from the same chair, if you have limited space or limited funds.

And speaking of shampoos, there will doubtlessly be those who come in for those, as well. Or at least they'll need them in preparation for other styling needs. You might have a chair with a reclining back near a special shampoo sink, complete with a spray hose for rinsing. Just be sure that chair is both durable and comfortable. A good shampoo bowl will be deep, with a place for the neck to rest while the client's hair is being washed. Many of these will also have cabinet space beneath so you can store the shampoos and conditioners you'll need near at hand.

After the stylist finishes the washing, naturally the drying comes next. Even there, there are a great many options. If you like, you might start with a warmed towel, if you purchase a towel warmer, but eventually you'll want to use a mechanical dryer of some kind. Most salons have at least a simple handheld blow dryer to hasten the drying process so further styling can come next, but many opt to have additional dryers, or even dryer chairs. You could have a rolling dryer that can be brought to the chair, a wall-mounted dryer, or even a chair specifically for drying, complete with a timer which shuts off the heat at just the right time.

For the big finish, consider equipment that will make the process just perfect, like steamers, processors, or lamps. These give the hair just the right temperature to set color or perms. You could allow the stylist to set the temperature, but many can be set for the type of hair, such as thick, colored, fine, average, bleached. They can also be set for the type of treatment, like coloring, bleaching, or perms. As with dryers, these can be mounted on the wall, or purchased on wheeled stands, so they can be moved to the client.
