The step-up as a glute and hip exercise

Looking at the Step-Up as A Great Exercise for Your Clients

In the last edition of FITNESS INSIDER we discussed the benefits of the step up - excellent activation of the hip abductors, improved function of the foot, and teaching proper alignment between the hip, knee, and foot. Also we discussed the importance of using the proper height step to ensure proper hip and lower extremity alignment. In this week's video we will look at how to cue proper hip mechanics and progressions of the step up.

As a review, the following mechanics must be maintained during the step up:

* The client must be able to maintain their foot tripod during the pattern.

* The foot, knee, and hip must be aligned and remain aligned throughout the pattern.

* The pelvis must remain squared to the lower extremity and to the step.

* The spine and trunk must be aligned over the pelvis. The core must remain activated to ensure proper positioning of the trunk, spine, and pelvis throughout the pattern.

Once the basic mechanics are mastered, the step up can be progressed by adding weight or by stepping up onto one leg.

Check out the accompanying video now to view some common corrections to help improve your client's pattern as well as an easy progression for your higher level clients. http://fitnesseducationseminars.com/step_up_2.htm

Conclusion

The step up is an excellent pattern for improving the mechanics of the lower extremity and can be progressed based upon your client's ability. Ensure optimal form by making sure your client maintains joint stabilization and alignment throughout the pattern. Be sure to include the step up in your tool box for improving lower extremity function especially of the hip abductors.
