After a night a partying and counting down the New Year, if you're up for it, there are lots of things to do and see on New Year DC. Some shops and attractions are closed for the national holiday, but there are still some exciting things to do.

The Smithsonian Institution is open on New Year's Day. All of their many museums are open to the public. It would be impossible to see all of the Smithsonian museums in one day because there are just too many, so first decide which museums you want to visit that day and schedule your day around museum hopping. The Smithsonian museums include the Air and Space Museum, the American Art Museum & Portrait Gallery and the Freer & Sackler Galleries. Admissions to all of the museums are free. New Year in DC is worth the trip.

The National Zoo is open to the public and does not charge admission either. The zoo is located in Rock Creek Park and spreads over 163 acres. The zoo holds over 450 animals, including the famous pandas. Everyone that visits the zoo wants to see the pandas, and if you have children with you on your trip to New Year DC make sure that they get the chance to see them!

If there are no children with you on your trip head over to Georgetown and see what shops and restaurants are open. Because DC is such a tourist attraction for New Year's Eve, many restaurants, shops, and sports bars are open. There are so many things to do New Year DC and one is just taking in the splendor of the city.

Walk the National Mall and see all of the monuments and memorials that have been erected over the years. The Washington Monument alone is breathtaking and so is the reflecting pool and the US Capitol. The Vietnam Veteran's Memorial is in the mall as well as The World War Two Memorial and The Lincoln Memorial. You don't have to leave on New Year's Day. There is plenty to do and see and this year New Year DC falls on a Saturday so you can make a long weekend out of your trip.
