Thriving In A Technology Driven World
For close to one hundred years the telephone directories provided advertising solutions to local businesses that wanted to attract new customers
. Giving local merchants a place to list their services and advertise their products, the telephone directories are quickly being replaced by the online services of search engines that quickly produce listings of businesses and service providers that are centrally located to the person conducting a web search.
Although the telephone directories are still in use by some people, this form of searching for localized businesses is becoming obsolete. With the internet searches being used to generate business for companies that operate in a local market the need for a complete local marketing strategy has shifted from the once popular telephone directories to the more convenient and readily accessible search engines. It is reported that 84 percent of all searches conducted online are for local businesses and services. What this means is that people who use the search engines are most likely to be looking for something within their own neighborhood or at least within their city.
Because the older hard copy phone directories are losing their appeal to audiences as more and more people are accessing the internet from their mobile devices as well as their computers, it is becoming ever more important for business owners to plan an implement a viable local marketing strategy for their companies. Regardless of the size or number of employees working for them, business owners must take action to keep their current customers loyal to them and increase the numbers of new customers that are seeking their products or services.
In the fast moving, technology driven world people want results instantaneously and they are accustomed to having information at their fingertips that is both accurate and reliable. Armed with smart cell phones and PDAs, the youth of today are growing up not knowing what a telephone directory is let alone how to use one to find a business that they are looking for. Instead these consumers turn to the ease and convenience of the internet to look up exactly what they want, when they want it, and sometime complain that it is not available to them immediately with little or no effort. This generation is responsible for the greater portion of disposable income among all consumers and will soon overtake the older baby boomers in the amount of income that they spend each year.
Without a local marketing strategy in place many established businesses may face their untimely demise at the hand of technology charged consumers. However by incorporating an online local marketing strategy that uses the effective and structured tools of search engine marketing to generate leads and sales for businesses the future may be a very bright place for local merchants. Even without having a website to support their local marketing efforts brick and mortar businesses can be searched for and found online.
With a website to provide a backbone to their local marketing efforts, businesses can thrive in the new economy and surpass their previous sales with the addition of online local marketing strategies for attracting business from the technology driven generation.
