Time Management Tips for MBA Students

As an MBA student, you are highly-motivated, goal-oriented and generally efficient in your use of time

. Like everyone, you could probably benefit from a few simple techniques to help maximize your time management.

Identify Your Personal Strengths and Weaknesses - You know yourself well enough by now to be able to identify when and where you shine, and when and where you fall behind. Are you an enthusiastic morning person who can barely focus on a task after seven in the evening? Are you an extremely organized self-taskmaster, but one who still manages to leave unfavored projects until the last minute? By isolating your strengths and weaknesses, you will stay alert to potential time management challenges, which you will be able to stem before they become full-blown problems.

Stay on Top of Your Calendar - Whether you prefer an old-fashioned bound agenda, a paper calendar or a PDA, your calendar is your key to maintaining a structured and organized student life. Write down all your academic and professional commitments, as well as your social ones. And as hard as it may be to come by, try to pencil in un-scheduled free-time for at least a few hours each week.

Create "Zones" Where You cannot be Disturbed - This is as much about creating a distraction-free psychological state as a physical one. First, find a place in your home, in the campus library or wherever, where you will be able to study unperturbed. Likewise, eliminate all personal distractions from your "zone." This will most likely mean disabling your internet. If you need the internet for research purposes, you will have to muster up the will power not to check sports scores or your email while you work.

Prioritize - Every task you face can be ranked according to its relative value and the time frame in which it must be accomplished. Obviously, the most important tasks, due in the shortest amount of time, should generally be tackled first. Oftentimes, those are the projects that we have the greatest tendency to procrastinate doing, because they tend to be challenging and time consuming. Come up with a plan that works with your natural rhythms in order to complete these tasks. If working on them for thirty minutes each day suits your disposition, try that. Or perhaps you would prefer to set a date when you will sit down at your desk and not get up until the project is finished.

Reward Yourself - This final tip cannot be emphasized enough. Believe it or not, earning your MBA shouldn't just be about becoming a super-human self-taskmaster. When goal-setting, factor in rewards for achievement. Promise yourself a movie or a night out with friends once you finish, or make a substantial dent in, a project. Also remember that the business world is network-driven, so enjoy that end-of-the-week happy hour with your peers. If you have successfully implemented all the above time management tips, you know you will be able to accomplish all your tasks and still manage to live a little.
