Tips On Delegating for Business Owners
We have all seen them, the office manager with the huge "S" on their chest and the cape flying behind them as they run hither a dither trying to do all the jobs in the office. We see them as they get fried from their efforts. As a seasoned small business consulting coach, this is one of the #1 issues I find with business owners who are stretched too thin. Afraid of letting go of the least bit of authority, we wonder why are they killing themselves when there are so many other capable people around. These are the people who have not learned that authority is about delegating and not doing. Do not let this be you. As the leader you have to make a myriad of decisions in a day and you just cannot be everywhere at once. As a leader it behooves you to foster the budding leaders on your team. You have to enable them to grow and contribute their best. By not delegating jobs and other duties you stifle their growth and miss out on the potential inherent in each individual. If you want to be a more effective leader here are a few tips on how to delegate and improve your management style.1. Being in control has never meant that you have to do every single thing yourself. The work environment is the most interdependent environment in the world. Share the responsibility and the glory. This will keep you from feeling like everyone else is riding high on your efforts alone. It will also give the others in the workplace a sense that they are indeed valued members of the team.2. Sure delegating involves risk. This is why it is important that you know the strengths and weaknesses of the people you are working with. Even though you have delegated the job you can still monitor the progress and if it seems to be going awry step in to assist. If you don't know anything about the internet or computers, don't buy web hosting for your company. Delegate it. If it takes you a long time to write website copy, delegate it. Its really just that simple.Notice we said to assist not take over. Ultimately as the one in charge the projects success or failure will fall on your shoulders so delegate jobs to those you know can handle them. It is called "putting your Aces in the right places". Do not hover you might be surprised at the talents you have been wasting.3. When delegating a task make certain you can explain it clearly and that the person has a full understanding of what it is you want from them. Task should be measurable, have a time limit, and be achievable and realistic. Giving out assignments that are vague will almost guarantee failure. Not every person will respond to you the same way, some need more direction than others but do not let this deter you from helping each team member to stretch and grow. The more you allow them to handle the more they will be capable of dealing with. Save your self from burn out and delegate for the benefit everyone involved.
